—Zösky[source]

Zösky is one of the two main characters from the French/Canadian series Kaput and Zösky. Zösky is the tall, thin one of the duo, and more the planner. He seems to be well versed on matters beyond Kaput's control, and is quite easily agitated by his partner's mayhem and discord. He also wishes to first use his mind to dominate rather than brute force.

Appearance[]

Zösky transparent

Zösky is a tall, thin, sausage-like alien with pink or lavender skin and two long, yellow ears at the top of his head, similar to a rabbit's. He wears a black body suit with three yellow buttons and tall black boots. Zösky is usually seen with closed or squinted eyes but they often open up to supplement various expressions, most commonly fear or surprise. Open, his eyes are drawn as either two black dots or little white circles with or without pupils. In Cosmic Hospital, the doctor states that Zösky is significantly underweight.

Personality[]

S01E01c The Zding isn't swayed

"You want to win, you've got to have a plan."
—Zösky[source]

Often described as a pseudo-intellectual, Zösky is cunning and methodical but often misguided in his strategies to dominate planets and their inhabitants. Despite the countless failures of his plans he possesses an immense confidence in his intellect and is easily excited by his own ideas, often recounting them with enthusiasm and flair, and will often put far more faith in them than warranted. He comes up with these schemes spontaneously more often than not and puts little thought into them afterwards which is likely the reason they're often doomed to fail. He is highly narcissistic in general, often arguing about semantics such as who's name should be said first or who is and isn't the "sidekick".

Though just rash enough to be harmless, Zösky does legitimately have a mind tuned to the logical and tends to be decently cautious when it comes to his escapades. He tries to avoid conflict and violence when possible, recognizing when it is unnecessary, but isn't afraid to take a more aggressive approach if need be. He is sadistic, arguably just as much as Kaput is, often musing with him about the awful things they'll do to the inhabitants when they approach a new planet and finding enjoyment in tormenting them, but understands that in order to reach their goal they'll need to bide their time. One of his favorite methods is to suck up to those in charge and so he is exceptional at flattery, often practising proper manners though he expressly doesn't enjoy doing so.

Zösky has a tendency to be dramatic, often using grandiose, flowery language and exaggeration in this speech. He isn't above having similar childish outbursts as Kaput but is far more stubborn than him, typically resisting his partner's attempts at cheering him up and only coming out of them when forced to. He requires some level of consistent mental stimulation, sometimes expressing periods of dissatisfaction in his lifestyle and even seeming to go into the occasional bought of depression when travelling for too long.[1]

While travelling, Zösky is often seen with his head buried in a book or a map and seems to hold an interest in mentally stimulating activities. He enjoys puzzles even if he isn't particularly good at them and owns a wide array of guidebooks, priding himself on his navigational skills and general knowledge of the galaxy, though this confidence is often misplaced. He is, however, undoubtedly an adept engineer, capable of inventing and building large machines, and seems to be fluent in the workings of spacecrafts.

Background[]

Zösky was born on the planet Lamamma to a strict mother. At some point he ran away from home to become an invader, and hasn't spoken to his family since (until accidentally crash-landing on Lamamma in Oh No! This Is My Planet...). Not much of his history is disclosed outside of this, but it is revealed in Mom! We're on TV! that Kaput convinced him to get his own Crisperizer. He at some point attended high school, dating Glutina.

Relationships[]

S01E06b Oh Kaput

Zösky giggling at Kaput's unintended albeit brilliant move.

"Kaput, you're back! You saved my life, I'm touched! I'd like to know what took you so long but I'm touched, believe me!"
—Zösky, hugging Kaput[source]

  • Kaput: Kaput is Zösky's partner in crime. As Kaput is more violent than Zösky, the latter often tries to calm him down to avoid him from causing a commotion that could get them into trouble. Zösky has a tendency to nag or lecture Kaput on occasion, sometimes coming off as patronizing. Despite their differences, they consistently refer to each other as their best friend and in fact appear to be each other's only friend. The two are very comfortable around each other, not afraid to banter or rant freely with the other, and are rarely-- if ever --seen alone. Zösky cares deeply for Kaput's well-being but is not above occasionally messing with him for his own amusement, similar to the way a big brother would. (Read more)
  • Family: The population of Lamamma is excited to see Zösky when he crash lands on the planet with Kaput and refer to him as "Cousin Zösky" while he's there. Zösky is terrified of his mother as he had ran away from home to become an invader, leaving his chores unfinished. Despite this, he still clearly cares for his mother, showing concern for her well-being when she's knocked unconscious and expresses relief when she wakes up. His father is not shown. In The Space Salesman, Kaput mentions that Zösky has a brother-in-law (who is then immediately implied by Zösky to also be a criminal).

Trivia[]

  • For a long time it was unclear whether the appendages on Zösky's head were ears or antennae. The former is suggested in the episode Me, Me, Me! where Kaput references "those ears" in relation to him, but most summaries of the show describe them as antennae. Additionally, Zösky is shown covering his ears while Kaput uses a jackhammer in Heads or Tails, and they are implied to be at the sides of his head. It has been confirmed by Lewis, however, that they are in fact meant to be ears.[2]
  • Zösky is susceptible to panic attacks when around crowds.[3]
  • Unlike Kaput, it is arguably implied in several episodes that Zösky isn't entirely satisfied with their lifestyle and desires stability, immediately agreeing to stay with Glutina in Glutina and outright expressing the notion in Squishy Squids. He also appears to have a desire for romance, owning at least one romantic novel and moving things along quite rapidly when reunited with the aforementioned Glutina. However, it is worth noting that Zösky is an emotionally impulsive character in general and such instances could be due to his natural tendency to be dramatic.
  • To some characters in the show, Zösky is considered attractive, perhaps due to his British accent and his suave manners.
  • Zösky harbors many of the traits of a psychopath (i.e., manipulation, superficial charm, narcissism, violence, callousness, criminal behavior and one could argue that, though not as dramatic as in Kaput, he does possess his own issues regarding impulsion).
  • Despite having been mistaken as a rabbit by some characters, he cannot stand carrots and seems to find the idea that he resembles one to be ridiculous.
  • In the French dub, Zösky states that "everything started for [him]" the day Kaput quit his job.
  • According to a doctor, Zösky is "in terrible shape".[4] Though, interestingly enough, while Kaput seems bothered by his diagnosis, Zösky doesn't seem to take his very seriously and even disregards Kaput's concern.
  • Zösky does not have hair and is rather sensitive about the fact.[5] However, he does have a small patch of it on his chest.[6]
